Fenris met Barkspawn in the back alleys of Lowtown, trying to reach Hawke’s house by a discreet route. He was not quite sure how he knew Barkspawn specifically, but the dog itself assisted by approaching and looking up at him as if expecting to be greeted.
"Is Hawke with you?" he asked, thinking perhaps the dog would lead him to the mage. But the dog shook his head and pawed the ground, then walked away in the direction of the docks. He paused and turned back to indicate that Fenris should follow.
In b4 deadline for askbroodyelf’s collaboration competition, this artwork is by Arbeekypok based on this kid fic by me. Thanks to the anon who suggested “The first time Fenris holds f!Hawke’s and his newborn child” in response to my call for fic prompts!
Trigger warning: reference to placenta eating!
Fenris wondered if this was the way he had been born - mother hunched and panting, huddled in a remote hut on the side of a snow-covered mountain (but it could have been in a steaming jungle, or an arid beach), alone but for an inexperienced companion, hoping that the howling outside was a storm and not a pack of wolves. He had sent Varania away, and now he would never know.
Hawke was covered in sweat, her pitch-black hair slicked across her brow, her body slumped back against the wall of the hut. “Is it… ?”
He examined the tiny lump of blood and fat in his hands. It was certainly screaming enough for any concerned parent. The cord twisted between its legs - he pulled it aside to confirm that the child was a girl. She had a full head of black hair, so identical to her mother that Fenris was almost surprised she didn’t have a scar across her nose.
"Female. Seems healthy enough," said Fenris, diffidently. He shoved the baby at Hawke. She was a woman - she would know what to do.
It was only after Hawke had safely taken the child and clumsily attached it to a breast, taking much longer to settle in than Fenris expected, that he realised he was shaking.
(( Wanted to write out some interactions between Carrick Hawke and his companions. Started with Fenris, whom he has 100% friendship with. And I see very little platonic fic between Fenris and Hawke, so it’s an experiment in that, also.
Bear in mind I am totally not a writer so it’s not great.))
Fenris has to admit that Carrick is a good teacher, in spite of all their arguing about magic and templars.
I’m still reading this through slashgoggles, but it works either way!
like do people really think that m!hawke and f!hawke are presented in equal amounts around here? is that a delusion a lot of people have?
I don’t see a lot of M!Hawke but I fully admit to unfollowing most people who draw/write/talk about M!Hawke and tumblr savioring ships that have him in them. As for M!Shep I don’t follow ANYONE who ships him with anyone except for one or two people, so I see a HELL of a lot more F!Shep. I haven’t had to tumblr savior him, he doesn’t seem to pop up as much.
I definitely think there’s more M!Hawke out there than F!Hawke, with Shepard for me at least it’s the other way around.
I think if you just do a quick check of AO3 you see that M!Hawke is more popular than F!Hawke. Also the majority of people who have large followings on Tumblr seem to favor m!slash. Even if it doesn’t include Hawke or the Warden, then m!slash side pairings of companions.
So no I don’t really think there is equal representation. I think ships that involve female characters in any respect are less popular.
This is a topic that has been talked to death. The reasons why this is are myriad and I’m not really interested in getting into them. But m!slash pairings are more popular in almost every fandom there is, I don’t know how you could believe that Dragon Age is any different.
Hmm. I’ve always perceived the exact opposite to be the case—not referring to F!Hawke’s representation in official promotions and media, where she’s shamefully absent—but strictly regarding her presence in fanworks, where I think she is more prevalent than M!Hawke. I just did a check of A03, fanfiction.net, and the kmeme to make sure my own perception wasn’t way off.
On AO3: fics featuring F!Hawke=448, fics featuring M!Hawke=299.
On fanfiction.net: fics featuring F!Hawke=933, fics featuring M!Hawke=876.
On the DA kinkmeme: Argh, Delicious’s new setup makes it difficult for me to figure out exact counts. Back in 10/2011, someone on BSN compiled the stats and at that time, F!Hawke=901 fills vs M!Hawke=614 fills. Now, doing a sort by count, it appears that F!Hawke is still ranking above M!Hawke, but I can’t find an easy way to quantify it there.
I hope you’re right, that would be nice to see.
How did you get your AO3/FF.net figures? I ask because there may be a number of ways to tag and distinguish male and female Hawke (ie #f!hawke, #Marian Hawke, #femHawke, #Aaliyah Hawke etc).
